Optimal Caregiving for the first 1000 days – KHUKU OMUKOSI (Cool Grandmother)

The Khuku Omukosi campaign reimagines the traditional mother-in-law often seen as overbearing as a wise, switched-on grandmother and a powerful agent of positive change. Drawing from formative research that identified grandmothers as key influencers of maternal and child nutrition, the campaign positions Khuku Omukosi as the trusted voice of reason and tradition, but also as someone willing to challenge harmful norms. She rewrites the rules, breaks taboos, and champions better nutrition practices for women and children from pregnancy to age two. Through multimedia social and behaviour change approaches, she becomes the face of Obulesi Bulahi, influencing caregivers and shaping healthier behaviours. The campaign also strengthens the capacity of service providers and supports coordination among local nutrition stakeholders. By reframing grandmothers not as barriers but as allies, Khuku Omukosi leads a cultural shift balancing tradition with modern knowledge to nurture a healthier next generation. The campaign is funded by USAID through JSI in partnership with CBCC and County government of Kakamega.
