Universal Health Coverage – Afya Nyumbani (Health at Home)

In Kenya, when families talk about wellbeing, they often say: health is wealth”. Yet for many, access to quality healthcare feels distant, tied only to hospitals or clinics in towns. What if the first line of care didn’t begin at the hospital gate, but right at the doorstep, in the home, in the village, in the everyday lives of people? This is the spirit behind Afya Nyumbani: the belief that health, like family, starts closest to home. Launched as part of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage journey, Afya Nyumbani (Health at Home) reframes healthcare from a distant service to a lived community reality. It showcases the strength of community-based primary healthcare networks, positioning community health workers as everyday heroes, the first responders, the teachers, and the guides who ensure no one is left behind. Families are beginning to see prevention, early detection, and healthy practices not as abstract policies but as part of their daily life. This initiative was led by the Ministry of Health, with support from USAID and partners, and multimedia engagement by CBCC.
