Cholera Prevention – Twanga Kolera (Knockout Cholera)

Twanga Kolera, Kuwa Mlinzi wa Jamii (Protect Yourself, Family, and Community) is a unified, empowering call to action against cholera. This nationwide campaign encourages everyone to adopt practical, everyday hygiene behaviours as routine, such as using toilets, washing hands with soap, treating drinking water, eating safe food, and getting vaccinated. Twanga Kolera avoids blame and stigma by targeting all communities equally, regardless of class or past outbreaks. Messaging is positive and confidence-building, helping people feel capable of reducing risk in their homes and environments. Rather than associating hygiene solely with disease, the campaign promotes it as a pillar of dignity, health, and community care. It positions every action as protective, not just of oneself, but of loved ones and neighbours too. By rooting messaging in local languages, daily realities, and shared responsibility, Twanga Kolera becomes more than a campaign: it’s a movement for community-powered health and resilience. The campaign is funded by UNICEF and implemented by CBCC in partnership with Ministry of Health and other partners.
