In Kenya, there is a saying, “Education is the key to life”, yet for too many children, especially in arid, marginalized, and informal settlement areas, this key remains out of reach. Poverty, long distances to schools, disability, and harmful social norms keep children, particularly girls, locked out of classrooms and denied their chance to learn, grow, and thrive. “Come Twende Shule,” meaning Come, Let’s Go to School, reframes schooling as both a right and a shared responsibility, calling on parents, teachers, community leaders, and government to unite in bringing back out-of-school children. At its heart, it speaks to the vision where every child, has a fair chance of attending school and unlocking their potential. Beyond the numbers, Come Twende Shule is shifting community mindsets. Parents are beginning to see education not as a burden, but as an investment in their children’s future. Communities feel renewed ownership of local schools, while children express pride in being part of the movement. This campaign was spearheaded by UNICEF in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, County Governments, CBCC and partners.
