HIV and AIDs – Shujaa Wa Kweli (Be a True Hero)

In Turkana folklore, Shujaas (heroes), are celebrated in songs and dances as protectors of the community. Traditionally, courage was measured by confronting wild animals, defending herds, or braving the harsh environment. But today, the greatest threats are not only external. They lie within the community itself: diseases that silently weaken families and futures. The Shujaa Wa Kweli campaign redefines heroism for a new generation. A shujaa (hero) is the man, woman, or youth who chooses to protect loved ones through health. At its heart is one powerful message: “The True Test of Courage” is getting tested for HIV. Because when you overcome this test, no other challenge can defeat you. Branding HIV testing as an act of courage, not fear. Shujaa Wa Kweli inspires a cultural shift in Turkana, heroes are no longer just warriors, but protectors who embrace health services for their families. The campaign is funded by PEPFAR and USAID and implemented by CBCC in partnership with Ministry of Health, the County government of Turkana, AMREF and other partners.
