Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health — Anzilisha (Right Start)

In many Kenyan communities, there is a saying: a child begins to be nurtured in the womb”. Yet for years, too many mothers began that journey without the right support, leading to silent struggles; anaemia, stunting, and newborn deaths that could have been prevented. “Anzilisha” meaning “to start” or “to set in motion”, a perfect metaphor for a healthier beginning in life. The idea is simple yet transformative: equip families, health workers, and communities with knowledge, support, and tools so that every pregnancy and every child’s first 1,000 days are filled with strength, not struggle. The campaign seeks to spark visible and lasting change: more women attending antenatal visits early and consistently, families increasingly adopting iron-rich diets, supporting pregnant women to eat more nutritiously, fathers and elders becoming more visible in maternal and child health conversations and counties strengthening their health systems, improving the delivery of Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Nutrition services. The Right Start Initiative (Anzilisha) is funded by the Government of Canada through Nutrition International and implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health and County Governments across 21 counties.
