Child Protection in Emergencies

Emergencies place children at the heart of vulnerability. Whether it is drought, floods, or conflict, these situations magnify the everyday struggles families already face, stripping away the safety nets that protect children. Without protection, the consequences can last a lifetime. Tuwajibike, Tuwalinde Watoto (“Let us be accountable, let us protect our children”) is about safeguarding dignity, nurturing hope, and keeping alive the dreams that emergencies threaten to extinguish. Just as elders in Turkana say, “Ekitela ng’akipi, akiriket” (“If the firewood is crooked, the cooking pot falls”), our communities recognize that if children are not safeguarded, the entire society suffers. The campaign is sparking conversations that helps parents and caregivers explore safer ways to cope during emergencies. Children themselves, through schools and in their communities, became part of the solution, speaking out against child labour, encouraging peers to stay in school, and finding solidarity in safe spaces. This campaign is being implemented by the County Government of Garissa, County Government of Tukana, CBCC and partners with the support of UNICEF.
